Petal, a new free and open-source browser for Android, is drawing attention for going beyond the basics. Built on GeckoView 158, it features a Material 3 Expressive interface, built-in ad and tracker blocking, and an unusually extensive feature set for a Gecko-based mobile browser. Early discussion among open-source and de-Googled browser enthusiasts highlights it as a fresh alternative on Android.

Why now: Open-source and privacy-focused Android users are interested in new GeckoView-based browser alternatives beyond Chromium.
