Scientists and space enthusiasts are discussing how Mars's gravity, about 38% of Earth's, might permanently change human bones, muscles and circulation over a lifetime on the planet. Deep-space radiation adds further risks of DNA damage and cancer, and experts note it remains unknown whether Martian gravity is sufficient for long-term human health, keeping the question open as plans for crewed Mars missions advance.

Why now: Renewed interest in crewed Mars missions has put long-term human survival on the planet back in focus.
