Russian independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta is shutting down, with the outlet citing sustained pressure from what it calls the 'special services'. The paper, long associated with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dmitry Muratov, has been one of the last independent voices in Russian journalism. News of the closure is drawing attention worldwide, with readers expressing concern over the shrinking space for free press in Russia.
Why now: The announced closure of one of Russia's last major independent newspapers marks a significant escalation in the crackdown on press freedom.
