On this day in 758, Arab and Persian raiders attacked and sacked Guangzhou, then one of China's busiest port cities, before withdrawing. The episode is remembered as a striking early example of maritime conflict along the Silk Road sea routes and a moment when foreign merchant communities in Tang-dynasty China became targets of violence.

Why now: The anniversary of the 758 sack of Guangzhou prompted posts marking the historical event today.
