Pygmy Blue Whale Songs Reveal Feeding Patterns off Western Australia
New research uses the songs of pygmy blue whales off Western Australia to track when and where the animals feed. Acoustic monitoring of the whales' characteristic calls shows their song activity corresponds with feeding patterns in the region's coastal and offshore waters. The findings offer scientists a non-invasive way to monitor the endangered whales and better understand their movement and foraging behaviour.
Why now: Fresh research showing whale song can reveal feeding behaviour is drawing attention from environment watchers
