Safe Pumpkin Disposal Urged to Protect Wildlife
Original: How to protect wildlife and the environment through safe pumpkin display and disposal practices
Colorado mountain news outlets including Summit Daily, Post Independent and Aspen Times are advising readers on safe pumpkin display and disposal after Halloween. Leftover jack-o'-lanterns dumped outdoors can attract wildlife such as bears, deer and rodents into populated areas and spread mold or candles' toxins. Wildlife experts recommend composting pumpkins at home, using designated drop-off compost sites, or placing them well away from homes so animals are not drawn toward neighborhoods.
Why now: It is the post-Halloween season, when discarded pumpkins pose a recurring wildlife and bear-safety issue in Colorado communities.
