Expelled migrants in Mauritania describe degrading treatment
Original: Mauritania: 'They treat us as if we are not human' say expelled migrants
Migrants expelled in Mauritania say they are being treated as if they are not human, describing harsh and degrading conditions during and after their removal. The testimonies shed light on how West African migrants are handled as they are pushed back, often transit cases bound for or returning from attempts to reach Europe. Rights groups and regional media are drawing attention to the conditions they report facing.
Why now: Fresh testimonies from expelled migrants have put a spotlight on migrant treatment in Mauritania, a key transit country on the Atlantic route to Europe.
