Iran's nuclear doctrine debate reflects call for stronger deterrence
Original: Iran’s nuclear doctrine debate reflects national demand for stronger deterrence
A debate over Iran's nuclear doctrine is under way, framed as reflecting a national demand for stronger deterrence. The discussion centres on whether Iran's defence posture, including its nuclear policy, should be strengthened in response to perceived external threats. The argument presented is that public and elite opinion in Iran increasingly favours a more robust deterrent capability, placing nuclear doctrine at the heart of the country's security debate.
Why now: Ongoing regional tensions have pushed Iran's nuclear policy and deterrence strategy back into public debate.
