North Korea rejects sanctions, asserts nuclear weapons state status

Original: North Korea says sanctions don't work to deny its status as nuclear weapons state

North Korea has declared that international sanctions cannot strip it of its status as a nuclear weapons state, according to a Reuters report. The statement, issued through state channels, reinforces Pyongyang's long-standing position that its nuclear arsenal is permanent and non-negotiable. It comes amid continued United Nations and Western sanctions aimed at curbing the country's weapons programmes, which North Korea insists have failed to change its strategic posture.

Why now: The statement signals North Korea's continued defiance of sanctions at a time of ongoing tensions over its nuclear programme.
