Russia and US veto rival UN Western Sahara resolutions

Original: Russia, US veto rival UN Western Sahara resolutions, leaving peacekeeping mission in limbo

The United States and Russia each vetoed rival draft UN Security Council resolutions on Western Sahara, leaving the mandate for the UN peacekeeping mission there, MINURSO, in limbo. The duelling texts reflected divisions over the future of the long-stalled Western Sahara peace process and the territory's status. Both resolutions failed, and the mission's future now depends on further negotiations among council members.

Why now: The double veto threatens the future of a UN peacekeeping mission and highlights renewed great-power deadlock at the Security Council.
