Holocaust memorial books honored lives lost and vibrant hometowns
Original: ‘Let nothing be forgotten’: Holocaust survivors’ memorial books honored lives lost and vibrant hometowns
After the Holocaust, Eastern European Jewish survivors collaborated on memorial books known as 'yizker bikher' to preserve the memories of murdered relatives, neighbors and the communities they came from. A new examination of these volumes highlights how they recorded not only deaths, but the daily life, culture and personalities of destroyed hometowns, fulfilling survivors' vow to 'let nothing be forgotten'.
Why now: New coverage of the yizker bikher tradition is prompting renewed reflection on Holocaust memory and remembrance.
