Machiida manager Akinori Makino suspended over referee criticism

Original: 槙野 智章

Akinori Makino, head coach of J2 side Machida Zelvia and a former Japan international, has been disciplined for remarks deemed inappropriate after he criticised a refereeing error. He received a two-match suspension and a 100,000 yen fine. Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu voiced understanding, saying he sympathises with Makino's feelings, while fans online argue referees face no punishment, calling it a double standard.

Why now: The penalty and Moriyasu's sympathetic comments have sparked debate over whether referees are held accountable in Japanese football.
