Atheist quote on God and heaven circulates online
Original: That God had to come to earth to find a mother for his son reveals the poverty of # heaven . —Lemuel K. Washburn _______
A quote attributed to Lemuel K. Washburn, the late nineteenth-century American freethought writer, is being shared by atheists and religious skeptics: "That God had to come to earth to find a mother for his son reveals the poverty of heaven." The line mocks the Christian nativity story, suggesting heaven lacked suitable candidates for Jesus's mother. Reactions among nonbelievers have been amused and approving.
Why now: The provocative quote challenges a core Christian belief, drawing engagement from atheist and freethought communities.
