Akai teased a new MPC Sample Key on Instagram earlier this week, announcing plans to open-source its software so the modding community can freely hack and customise the device. The move is unusual for a hardware maker and has drawn attention from producers and hobbyists, though Akai has not yet revealed pricing or a release date.

Why now: The open-source approach is unexpected for music hardware and appeals to the modding community.
