Evacuees from Russian-occupied Oleshky arrive in Ukraine via Belarus
Residents fleeing Oleshky, a town in the Russian-occupied Kherson region of Ukraine, have arrived in Ukrainian-controlled territory after transiting through Belarus. The unusual route, crossing from one Russia-aligned country back into Ukraine, highlights the limited options available to people leaving occupied areas. The arrivals draw attention to ongoing evacuations from flooded and occupied zones along the Dnipro river.
Why now: The rare evacuation route through Belarus from an occupied Ukrainian town is unexpected and newsworthy amid the ongoing war.
