Iran security chief says nuclear weapons ban under debate
Original: Iran security chief says debating whether to ditch ban on nuclear weapons
Iran's top security official said the country is debating whether to abandon its religious ban on developing nuclear weapons, according to a report by The Times of Israel. The statement marks an unusually open discussion of the fatwa that has long barred such weapons, drawing attention amid ongoing tensions over Iran's nuclear programme and international monitoring.
Why now: Any sign Iran might reconsider its ban on nuclear weapons is a major escalation in international nuclear concerns.
