New World screwworm flies, which invaded the United States in June, are now attacking domestic pets: four dogs and a cat were attacked this week alone. The USDA has identified 74 animal cases nationwide since the parasite arrived. The larvae eat living tissue, and officials are warning pet owners to watch animals for wounds that fail to heal.
Why now: The parasite's spread to household pets marks an alarming new stage in the outbreak.
