Italian Farmer Plants Mysterious Attic Seeds, Grows Possibly Extinct Plant

Original: An Italian farmer found some unknown seeds in his attic and planted them

An Italian farmer discovered a jar of unidentified seeds in his attic and, having nothing to lose, planted them. One seed germinated and grew into a plant that researchers believe may be silphium, the prized medicinal and culinary herb of the ancient Mediterranean that was harvested to extinction in antiquity. If confirmed, it would be a remarkable botanical find, and readers are debating the luck, science and lore behind the accidental discovery.

Why now: A chance discovery could revive a plant famous as extinct since ancient times, a story that is rare and exciting
