Original: Cardinal Simoni says faith sustained him through death sentence for Mass honoring President Kennedy The 98-year-old Alba

Cardinal Ernest Simoni, the 98-year-old Albanian prelate, marked a Mass honoring President John F. Kennedy by recounting how his faith sustained him while he was sentenced to death under Albania's communist regime, which severely persecuted religious believers. He called for prayers for world leaders, drawing on his experience of imprisonment and persecution as a message of endurance and reconciliation.

Why now: His remarks at a memorial Mass for Kennedy, combined with his age and remarkable story of surviving persecution, are drawing attention.
