New claims that CIA shielded El Chapo spark fresh debate
Original: el chapo
Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman is back in headlines after reports and a documentary revisited his two famous prison escapes and his 2016 capture. Outlets say the CIA ordered a halt to an operation to arrest him while he met actress Kate del Castillo and actor Sean Penn for their interview, and that the meeting delayed his capture. Commentators are questioning US involvement in the case.
Why now: New reporting and a documentary allege the CIA blocked an operation to capture El Chapo during the Sean Penn and Kate del Castillo interview.
