Italy debates Halloween versus All Saints' Day traditions
Original: 2 novembre festa
In Italy, discussion is growing around the November holidays, with many weighing Halloween celebrations on October 31 against the traditional feasts of All Saints' Day on November 1 and the Commemoration of the Dead on November 2. Commentators note the contrast between imported Halloween customs and longstanding Italian traditions of visiting cemeteries and honouring deceased loved ones at the start of November.
Why now: The start of November has reopened an annual debate in Italy over whether Halloween is overshadowing traditional Catholic feasts like All Saints' Day and the Day of the Dead.
