An extreme rainfall event struck southwest Mississippi near the Louisiana border, north of Picayune in Pearl River County, with around 12 inches falling in three hours and nearly 19 inches in six hours overnight. Observers say the totals exceed even 1,000-year rainfall criteria, prompting shock and discussion about the growing frequency of such extreme flooding events.
Why now: The extraordinary rainfall totals, far beyond typical 1,000-year event thresholds, are drawing widespread attention to extreme weather.
