US veto ends UN peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara
Original: Resolution veto ends UN’s Sahara mission
A UN Security Council resolution has been vetoed, effectively ending the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara. The mission, MINURSO, had monitored the ceasefire between Morocco and the Polisario Front since 1991. The veto leaves the long-running dispute over the territory without its main international monitoring framework, and observers are weighing what the decision means for regional stability.
Why now: The abrupt end of a decades-long UN peacekeeping mission raises questions about the future of the Western Sahara conflict.
