Mexico Declares War on Sargassum Seaweed Invasion

Original: The Ocean 'Was the Color of Chocolate.' Mexico Declares War on Seaweed.

Mexico has announced a major naval-led campaign against sargassum seaweed, whose annual blooms have turned Caribbean beaches brown and hurt tourism along the Riviera Maya. Locals describe the sea as looking like chocolate. The Navy has been tasked with intercepting the algae offshore before it reaches shore, and officials say the effort will involve floating barriers and collection vessels.

Why now: Sargassum season has hit Mexico's Caribbean coast again, damaging beaches and tourism, prompting an unusually aggressive government response.
