NASA's old Swift telescope set to fall to Earth

NASA's Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, an orbital telescope weighing about 1.5 tonnes, is expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere soon, according to the Associated Press. Most of the spacecraft will burn up on re-entry, but some parts made of tungsten are dense enough that fragments may survive and reach the ground. Agencies are tracking the descent, and the fate of the decommissioned observatory is drawing wide attention.
Why now: The imminent uncontrolled re-entry of a 1.5-tonne NASA telescope raises questions about where debris might land.
