President Volodymyr Zelensky has awarded Kostiantyn Vlasenko the title of Hero of Ukraine. Vlasenko held combat positions in the Kharkiv region for 491 days, nearly half of that time severely wounded and without both feet, according to reports circulating widely online. The story is drawing attention as a striking example of endurance during the war with Russia.
Why now: The extraordinary length of his service while catastrophically wounded makes the award a powerful symbol of wartime sacrifice.
