China drills attack on mock-up of US aircraft carrier

Original: China conducted a military exercise in which it carried out an attack on a full-scale mock-up of a U.S. aircraft carrier

China carried out a military exercise in which forces staged an attack on a full-scale replica of a US aircraft carrier. The mock target, built at a desert range, is widely seen as a rehearsal for strikes against American carrier groups and as a signal of Beijing's growing capability to project force in the Pacific. The drill is drawing attention amid ongoing tensions over Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Why now: Tensions between China and the United States over Taiwan and regional security are making any anti-carrier drill highly newsworthy.
