Author Joe Dunthorne on the scams targeting writers
Original: Writer Joe Dunthorne on the ever-growing scams attempted on authors https://www. theguardian.com/books/2026/nov /01/like
Writer Joe Dunthorne describes being bombarded by scam 'fan mail' in a Guardian piece, explaining that after replying to one such message he encountered something he did not expect. The article recounts how authors increasingly receive fraudulent correspondence impersonating fans or industry figures, and Dunthorne's personal experience of engaging with one of these approaches sheds light on how these scams operate and escalate.
Why now: Many writers recognise the growing wave of scam fan mail targeting authors, so the first-hand account is resonating.
