A regional councillor in the Balearic Islands has accused the Bishop of Mallorca of hypocrisy after the bishop publicly criticised the excesses of mass tourism on the island. The clash has drawn attention in Spanish media, highlighting tensions between the Catholic Church and local politicians over how tourism growth is affecting Mallorca, one of Spain's most visited destinations, where anti-tourism sentiment has been growing among residents.
Why now: Criticism of mass tourism in Mallorca is a live political issue, and a public church-versus-politician dispute adds controversy
