The United States is pushing to wind down Minurso, the long-running UN peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara, according to the German daily junge Welt. The move signals a further shift in Washington's position on the contested territory, where Morocco claims sovereignty and the Polisario Front seeks independence. Critics warn the withdrawal of the UN presence could destabilise one of Africa's longest unresolved conflicts.
Why now: Fresh reporting on a US policy shift affecting a decades-long frozen conflict that the UN has monitored since 1991.
