The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara has been left in limbo following a veto standoff between the United States and Russia at the Security Council. With the rivals blocking each other over the mission's renewal, its future mandate remains unresolved, adding new uncertainty to one of the UN's longest-running territorial disputes and drawing attention from international observers.
Why now: A US-Russia veto standoff at the Security Council has put the future of the MINURSO peacekeeping mandate in doubt.
