Donald Trump has described North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a 'friend' while downplaying the significance of Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal, according to Al Jazeera. The remarks signal a return to warmer rhetoric towards Kim, echoing the tone of their earlier summits, and have drawn attention for minimising the threat posed by North Korea's weapons programme.

Why now: Trump's friendly framing of Kim and dismissal of North Korea's nuclear capabilities touches on ongoing security and diplomatic concerns.
