Students invent $5 electricity-free vaccine cooler
Original: A vaccine can look normal even after freezing; four first-year students develop a $5 electricity-free vac
Four first-year students have developed a vaccine carrier that costs around $5 and works without electricity, designed to keep vaccines within safe temperatures. The idea responds to the problem that freeze-damaged vaccines can look normal but lose effectiveness, a risk in places with unreliable cold chains. The low-cost, power-free design is drawing attention as a practical fix for last-mile vaccine delivery in developing regions.
Why now: The announcement of a cheap, electricity-free solution to vaccine cold-chain damage is new and relevant to global health discussions.
