UN winds down MINURSO mission in Western Sahara

Original: A small UN team is overseeing the liquidation of the “MINURSO” mission following the end of its mandate

A small United Nations team is now overseeing the liquidation of MINURSO, the peacekeeping mission for Western Sahara, after the end of its mandate. The mission, deployed since 1991 to monitor a ceasefire between Morocco and the Polisario Front, is being formally closed down. The move marks a significant shift in the international presence in the disputed territory and raises questions about future monitoring arrangements.

Why now: The closure of a long-running UN peacekeeping mission in a contested region is a significant diplomatic development.
