Plans have been unveiled to bring the so-called Atomic-bombed Virgin Mary, a statue that survived the 1945 US atomic bombing of Nagasaki, to the United States. The statue, found damaged in the ruins near Urakami Cathedral, has long symbolised the suffering of the bombing and calls for nuclear disarmament. A US exhibition would bring this message to American audiences.
Why now: Plans to display a survivor of the Nagasaki atomic bombing in the US resonate amid ongoing global concerns over nuclear weapons.
