Oregon landowner David Hampton planted larch trees inside a Douglas fir forest so that, seen from above, they form a giant smiley face roughly 300 feet wide. The design draws attention every autumn, when the larch needles turn orange and the face stands out sharply against the evergreen forest. Images of the seasonal spectacle are circulating widely online, delighting viewers who praise the playful blend of forestry and art.

Why now: The larches have turned orange this autumn, making the giant smiley face visible and shareable right now.
