China's Ministry of Commerce has issued Announcement No. 48, described as the country's first export controls targeting frontier artificial intelligence technologies. The measure signals Beijing moving to restrict the outward flow of advanced AI capabilities, mirroring in part controls long imposed by the United States. Discussion online is focused on what technologies will be covered, how enforcement will work, and the implications for global AI competition and supply chains.
Why now: The announcement marks a major new phase in the US-China tech rivalry, affecting global AI firms and supply chains.
