Iran's navy reports that two tankers struck mines in the Strait of Hormuz, the critical shipping lane for much of the world's oil. The incident has raised alarm over a potential oil spill in an already stressed marine environment, and environmental campaigners are pointing to it as further evidence that fossil fuel dependence endangers peace, security and ecosystems.

Why now: Fresh reports of tanker damage in a vital oil shipping route are raising fears of war escalation and an environmental disaster.
