Original: Trump offers Musk preemptive pardon
Donald Trump has offered Elon Musk a preemptive pardon, according to reports drawing wide attention. The move would shield Musk from potential future federal prosecution, an unusual use of presidential clemency powers. Commentators are debating whether such a pardon is legally valid before any charges exist and what it signals about the relationship between the two men.
Why now: The extraordinary idea of a preemptive pardon for a close ally raises unusual legal and political questions.
