Oakland unions reach deals with city, averting one-day strike
Original: 1-day strike averted as Oakland’s major unions reach deals with city
Oakland's major labor unions have reached agreements with the city, canceling a planned one-day strike. The deals resolve contract disputes that had threatened to shut down city services, and the unions and city officials are presenting the outcome as a settlement both sides could accept. The agreements cover the city's largest employee unions, whose members had been preparing to walk off the job.
Why now: A threatened public-sector strike in a major California city was called off at the last minute after negotiated deals.
