EU says Aspides mission needs more than 10 warships amid Houthi threats
Original: EU says Aspides needs more than 10 warships amid Houthi threats
The European Union says its Aspides naval mission, which protects Red Sea shipping from Houthi attacks, requires more than 10 warships to operate effectively. The operation, launched to shield commercial vessels from repeated drone and missile strikes, has faced demands for greater resources as attacks by the Iran-backed Houthis continue and member states weigh how many ships to commit.
Why now: Ongoing Houthi attacks on shipping are putting pressure on the EU to expand its Red Sea naval protection operation.
