Indonesia's government has formally asked Russia to stop recruiting Indonesian citizens to fight in its war against Ukraine. Jakarta says Indonesians were tricked into joining the Russian military under the guise of civilian employment offers. The request highlights growing concern in Southeast Asia over citizens being lured abroad with fake job promises and ending up on the front lines of the conflict.
Why now: Reports that Indonesians were deceived into military service abroad have raised alarm about citizen safety and diplomatic relations with Russia.
