Haitian gang leader says he wrote UN seeking dialogue amid clashes
Original: Powerful Haitian gang leader tells AP he wrote UN seeking dialogue as clashes intensify
A powerful Haitian gang leader told the Associated Press that he has written to the United Nations seeking dialogue, as fighting between gangs and security forces intensifies in Haiti. The claim comes as gang violence continues to displace residents and strain the country's institutions. The UN has not been reported as responding, and the outreach is unlikely to soften international resolve against armed groups.
Why now: The surprise of a gang leader publicly seeking UN mediation while violence escalates is drawing attention to Haiti's worsening security crisis.
