More than 900 migrants arrived in Spain's Canary Islands over the weekend, and at least seven people died making the crossing, according to InfoMigrants. The route from West Africa, often from Gambia, remains one of the deadliest sea passages to Europe, and the heavy weekend toll has drawn attention to the dangers facing those attempting it.
Why now: A large weekend arrival wave combined with confirmed deaths has put the deadly Canary migration route back in the spotlight.
