AI data centres could undermine UK's net zero goals
Four planned hyperscale data centres in the UK are considering using gas-fired power for their electricity needs, according to BBC News. The development raises concerns that the rapid growth of energy-hungry AI infrastructure could clash with Britain's legally binding net zero commitments, since running the centres on gas would increase carbon emissions rather than cut them.
Why now: Debate over whether the UK's AI ambitions conflict with its climate targets is growing as data centre plans come to light
