Breaking the sound barrier: NASA tackles the sonic boom

Original: Zahlen, bitte! Über 343,2 Meter pro Sekunde – die Überwindung der Schallmauer Überschallflüge wären seit dem Jet-Zeitalt

Supersonic flight over land has been largely banned since the jet age because of the loud sonic boom produced when aircraft exceed roughly 343.2 metres per second, the speed of sound at sea level. NASA is now working on technology to reduce that boom to a gentle thump, which could pave the way for a return of commercial supersonic passenger flights.

Why now: NASA's Quiet SuperSonic Technology programme is reviving interest in commercial supersonic travel after decades of stagnation since Concorde.
