German bishop publicly challenges pope on Church abuse remarks
Original: German bishop challenges pope’s comments on systemic abuse in the Church
A German bishop has openly disputed comments by Pope Francis about systemic abuse in the Catholic Church, pushing back on the pontiff's characterization of the crisis. The public disagreement highlights ongoing friction between parts of the German Church and Rome over how abuse scandals are handled, coming amid Germany's own reckoning with abuse findings and reform debates.
Why now: Open criticism of the pope by a senior German bishop is rare and touches a sensitive, ongoing debate over abuse and reform in the Church.
