Nordic allies fear escalation with Russia in the Baltic
Original: On ‘NATO’s lake,’ Nordic allies worry about escalation with Russia
Nordic members of NATO are voicing concern that heightened tensions with Russia could escalate in the Baltic Sea, a body of water now often described as 'NATO's lake' since Finland and Sweden joined the alliance. While NATO's presence there has grown, governments in the region remain wary of provoking a wider confrontation with Moscow.
Why now: Ongoing NATO-Russia tensions in the Baltic region are keeping escalation risks in the news.
