Original: Episcopal Bishops Curry and Rowe Hold Funeral Service for Enslaved Africans' Reinterment
Episcopal bishops Michael Curry and William Rowe led a funeral service marking the reinterment of enslaved Africans whose remains were disinterred, giving them a burial with dignity decades or centuries after their deaths. The service is drawing attention as a symbolic act of repentance and remembrance, honoring those who died in slavery and prompting wider conversations about historical reckoning and church involvement.
Why now: A major church ceremony addressing the legacy of slavery resonates amid ongoing public reckonings with racial and colonial history.
