Magna Carta exhibition in China quietly shelved
Original: Slightly embarrassing that a Magna Carta exhibition in China is quietly shelved. Wrong ideas?
A Magna Carta exhibition in China has been quietly shelved, with the cancellation described as slightly embarrassing. Carl Bildt, former Swedish prime minister, suggested the rule-of-law ideas embodied in the 1215 charter may be the reason, asking whether the document's 'wrong ideas' made it unwelcome. The episode is drawing comment as a sign of sensitivity to the exhibition's themes of limiting state power.
Why now: The shelving of a Magna Carta exhibition in China is seen as politically telling about the country's attitude to rule-of-law ideas.
